Theory Tests Resuming - 23rd April 2021

The NI Executive have now announced that theory tests will be resuming from 23rd April 2021. As learners all around the country are excited to restart lessons though, we've received a lot of messages asking when theory test pass certificates expire. You need a valid theory test pass certificate to book and sit your practical driving tests.

A theory test pass certificate is normally valid for a period of 2 years. There have been a number of recent extensions granted in Northern Ireland for theory test passes due to the impact of coronavirus. Here's what you need to know.

Theory Test Extensions

Theory test originally expired between 1 March 2020 and 31 October 2020: Validity extended by 12 months.

Theory tests due to expire between 1 November 2020 and 30 June 2021 (not already benefited from an extension):

Validity extended by 8 months.

Any extensions are applied automatically by the DVA, you don't need to contact them to ask for an extension.

Candidates whose theory test certificates expire outside the times mentioned above, will need to resit their theory test.
